It’s important not to wait until you notice a change in your vision before scheduling your annual eye exam because eye problems are many times silent and present no symptoms. A recent study found that one in four adults were unaware that an eye exam could prevent them from losing their eye sight. Even if you’ve had laser vision surgery or have naturally good vision, it’s important to see your eye care professional annually. During your exam, a SNEAD EYE GROUP physician will look for eye muscle imbalance, vision disorders, and eye disease that could potentially cause future problems.

So don’t wait until a street sign looks blurry, or you have trouble seeing objects close up. In addition to detecting vision changes, regular eye exams can also detect life-threatening conditions such as high cholesterol and even brain tumors. The slower months in Southwest Florida are a good time to visit SNEAD EYE GROUP.

During the month of August, SNEAD EYE GROUP is offering 30% off eyeglass frames in our optical department.

Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty. It’s a big word, but here’s a primer to keep you informed on the latest technologies used to treat eye conditions by SNEAD EYE GROUP physicians.

You may have heard Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty referred to as SLT, a form of laser surgery used to lower intraocular pressure (IOP) in glaucoma patients. SLT is used when eye drop medications are not lowering pressure enough, drops are causing significant side effects, or patient compliance is an issue, such as forgetting to take medications or they are experiencing problems using eye drops.

With SLT, laser energy is applied to the drainage tissue in the eye. This starts a chemical and biological change that results in better drainage of fluid through the drain and out of the eye. This results in lowering of IOP.

The effects of SLT will generally last between 1-5 years and since the procedure is an accepted glaucoma treatment, and is FDA approved, it is covered by Medicare and medical insurance.

Some patients IOP can be controlled with just laser treatment. Others require additional lowering and may need to use glaucoma medication as well. Think of the SLT as equivalent to one glaucoma medication. Just as some patients will require more than one glaucoma medication to control their IOP, some may also require laser plus one or more glaucoma medications.

SLT is not a cure for glaucoma, just as medication and surgery are not. Whatever method is used to treat glaucoma, appropriate follow up and testing with a SNEAD EYE GROUP professional is critical. If you’re wondering if SLT may help you, call us today!

The numbers regarding cataracts are nearly astonishing. Did you know cataracts are the leading cause of blindness in the world? There are more than 24 million Americans age 40 and older with cataracts and more than half of all Americans will have cataracts by age 80.

June is Cataract Awareness Month and at SNEAD EYE GROUP we want to keep you informed of treatment options to keep you seeing your best.
Symptoms of cataracts include blurred vision, decreased vision at night, “halos” around lights and needing more light to read. These symptoms could also be indications of other eye problems, so it’s important to see your doctor if you are experiencing any of these.

Cataract surgery is the most commonly performed surgery in the United States. One eye at a time is treated and the procedure takes less than fifteen minutes. Because the eye is numbed with drops, patients typically feel nothing during or after the procedure. The cataract is removed through a tiny incision and a clear implant is put in its place.

New technology now allows patients several choices of lens implants that reduce the need for glasses after surgery. The decision on which implant is best for you should be determined by you and your SNEAD EYE GROUP surgeon, taking into account your lifestyle and overall health of your eye. At SNEAD EYE GROUP you are guaranteed to experience your best vision possible!

Although you can’t prevent cataracts, they are curable. Once cataracts begin restricting your activities or decreasing your ability to participate in normal activities like reading or driving, it’s time to talk with a SNEAD EYE GROUP physician about your surgery options.
