THE FUTURE OF SCLERAL CONTACT LENS FITTING USING CORNEAL VAULTING SYSTEM EXCLUSIVELY AT SNEAD EYE GROUP
A scleral lens, also known as a scleral contact lens and ocular surface prostheses is a large contact lens that rests on the sclera and creates a tear-filled vault over the cornea. Scleral lenses are designed to treat a variety of eye conditions, many of which do not respond to other forms of treatment.
The new Optovue Corneal Vaulting System is used to assist in scleral lens fitting by allowing visualization and mapping of the central corneal clearance (CCC), a key measurement related to how well the lens rests on the eye.
Corneal clearance is critical when fitting patients for scleral lenses, The new Corneal Vaulting System has allowed this process to become more efficient and convenient than merely estimating this clearance by a slit lamp visual exam, which is the current standard of care.
A scleral lens is a large contact lens that rests on the white portion of the eye (sclera) and is typically used to correct refractive errors in patients with irregular corneas, manage ocular surface disease such as dry eye, or may be worn by athletes who require excellent visual acuity and a stable lens fit during rigorous physical activity.
Traditional corneal imaging for identifying the clearance (vault) between the cornea and a scleral lens utilizes a fluorescein solution and a slit lamp, which results in one cross-sectional view. With Vault Mapping, a CCC assessment map is created, and the clearance pattern can be used to help determine if the lens is tilting or fitting improperly.
