  • Are Early Eye Exams Worth It?

Are Early Eye Exams Worth It?

Many hardworking men think they don’t have time for an eye exam, or they don’t think it’s important enough.

However, within just a few weeks you can go from seeing clearly to needing a thick pair of glasses, surgery, or worse. And your eye doctor is the only person who can stop it. That’s why eye exams are so important.

Here are a few more reasons why you should get an eye exam ASAP:

    1. Cataracts

Did you know that 9 out of 10 Americans develop cataracts by 65?

Even worse, cataracts often develop for years undetected with no symptoms. Meaning there are millions of people with cataracts building in their eyes while being completely unaware of it.

What are cataracts? It’s a tiny buildup of protein in your eye which causes foggy vision, sensitivity to light, and decreased vision, especially when driving at night.

Luckily, a simple eye exam can help your eye doctor catch and remove cataracts before they cause too much trouble.

    2. Catch Other Diseases Early

Your eye doctor doesn’t just protect your eyes. One peek into your pupil can reveal signs of; high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, and many other health problems.

That means your eye doctor can help you catch HUGE health problems early. Saving you time and money.

    3. Keep Your Independence

As many people age, they watch their vision fade. It becomes harder to see while driving at night, see people crossing the road, and safely cross the street.

In fact, many people start having to ask their family and friends for help. Now, there’s nothing wrong with getting help, but isn’t it a great feeling being able to rely on your own eyesight? In fact, many people who have waited too long to see a doctor have told me…

“I would do anything to get my old independence back.”

Keeping your independence means you keep doing the things you love, like golfing, fishing and driving confidently.

And you get to do it without any trouble!

Early Eye Exams Are The Key!

One simple visit to your eye doctor is all you need. It saves you a world of trouble.

  • How To Care For Your Parents In Sunny Southwest Florida

How To Care For Your Parents In Sunny Southwest Florida

Fort Myers is a hotbed for retirees and parents to live. Many of them move near their children, who also live here. Other retirees move far away from their children. Yet- whatever the case is, it’s important for many people to keep their parents healthy and independent.

The hot Florida sun doesn’t help. The UV rays penetrate deep into your parent’s eyes, speeding up the buildup of cataracts, muscle loosening, and eye disease. In fact, Florida has one of the highest rates of cataract in the US. That’s why combating these problems and protecting your parents’ eyes is critical.

What’s the solution? Find the person who knows EVERYTHING about your parents’ eyes. And build a relationship with that person. (or team)

Here’s What Our Team At Snead Eye Group Can Do For You:

    1.         Catch Eye Problems Early.

Did you know that cataracts, glaucoma, and eye disease develop for years before your parents notice? But, a simple iWellness screening shows an eye doctor what’s really going on in your parent’s eyes. Meaning we can catch eye problems before they get out of control.

    1.         Squash Other Diseases.

Your eyes are like a window into the health of your body. Your eye doctor can peer into your parents’ eyes to detect harmful diseases. For example, they can see high blood pressure, diabetes, and even some forms of cancer. So, annual visits to your eye doctor can help you catch these terrible diseases early.

    1.         Support Their Vision

There’s nothing worse than watching your parents’ vision fade. It becomes harder for them to read at night. They have to find someone to drive them to the store. And it gets harder to do normal things on their own…

Glasses, contacts, and even some surgeries help keep your parents’ vision healthy. All so you guys can feel safe and confident knowing you have a friendly eye doctor looking over your parents’ eyes. Imagine your parents doing what they love, with whom they love for many more years.

If you’re interested in speaking to one of our eye doctors, feel free to contact us.

Many eye problems like glaucoma, cataracts, or eye disease often go undetected until they’re robbing you of your vision… so see your eye doctor and take advantage of the iWellness Screening.

Why? Because for some problems it could take years for you to be able to detect any sign of an issue in your eye without special technology. As a result- millions of people have had their vision taken away due to undetected problems… But not anymore.

    Introducing The iWellness Screening

The iWellness screening gives you a report on the thickness of your retina and the health of your “ganglion cell complex.” Then, we take high-resolution pictures of your eye- then use those pictures in what’s called a “symmetry analysis.”

These powerful steps help us detect early signs of macular degeneration, glaucoma, and cataracts. Meaning you get to rest easy at night knowing your iWellness screenings are helping preserve your vision for many more years.

    Most men are busy.

They work hard all day long to put food on the table, save for retirement, and take care of their families. And they’re usually so busy that I hear this all the time:

“I’m too busy, I don’t have time to take care of my eyes.”

That’s silly. Why? Because your eyes are your window into your world. How are you going to work, take care of your family, or even drive down the street if you can’t see?

That’s right- you won’t. And I don’t want to be too blunt here – but I want to make sure men out there start to think about their eye health seriously. In fact, I’m about to show you all of the ways Snead Eye Group speeds up the appointment for an eye checkup process so you can get out of the office faster:

steering wheel, driving, eye checkup appointment

No More Driving For 45 Minutes

There’s nothing worse than having to hop into your car and drive out of town to visit your eye doctor. That’s why you’ll love to know that Snead Eye Group has convenient locations all over Lee and Collier Counties.

Meaning you’re a short distance away from the office so you can get right back to work- or right back to spending time with your family. In fact, the Snead Eye Group has been in business for more than 35 years! This means you can feel confident knowing your doctors have the experience to quickly diagnose and solve your eye problems like cataracts, glaucoma, dry eyes, and many more.

How To Cut Your Appointment Time In Half

One of the longest parts of any appointment used to be an endless stream of paperwork and questions. However, our Phreesia and Ocular Innovations systems help you to complete your information (and any important learning) from the comfort of your home. Meaning you can sit back and relax on the couch while filling out the forms…

Instead of wasting time at the office trying to get these things done. In fact, the more information you can provide our team before your appointment- the faster and better things are going to go. So that you can be out of the office quicker- and out doing the things that you want to do.

Trust In Eye Doctors That Don’t Fool Around

At Snead Eye Group– you’ll have a team of well-trained professional eye doctors in Fort Myers, Florida who will protect your eyes for many more years. For example- maybe you’ll work with the original Dr. John Snead- who has been a caring eye professional since 1979! He is board-certified in ophthalmology and even completed a fellowship in eye microsurgery all the way over in Australia.

Or maybe you’ll work with Dr. John Snead’s nephew Dr. Brad Snead. Dr. Brad Snead is an expert in cataract surgery– he received his medical degree from the Alabama School of Medicine, his MBA from Auburn University, and is one of the most recognized surgeons in his field.

You’ll find many more experienced professionals at the Snead Eye Group. A team who will quickly help you with your problems- so you can look younger, see clearer, and spend more time doing the things you love.

When they reach their 40’s- many people have vision problems. Objects become blurry. It gets harder to read books, your phone, and the newspaper. And some people start dealing with “dry eyes.”

    What’s the problem?

It’s called “presbyopia.” That’s where the lens in your eye starts losing its elasticity. Which makes it harder for your eyes to focus. It’s like you’re holding a camera where the “focus button” doesn’t work anymore…

In fact, the American Academy of Ophthalmologists estimated that 1.5 billion people in the world suffer from “presbyopia.” So even if you don’t see the effects yet- it could be coming.

And the last thing many women want to do is wear ugly glasses. (or keep wearing them)

Instead- here are some reasons why you should find an eye care provider- so you can stay looking and feeling young for decades.

Reason #1- Squash Eye Diseases Before They Become A Problemoptometrist

Did you know that the leading cause of blindness in the USA are age-related eye diseases?

Diseases like glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, or cataracts can cause a world of trouble. And worse yet- some of these diseases even plague patients who previously said:

“My vision is OK- I don’t need to see an eye doctor.”

Yet- when their eye doctor looked at their eye- they were both surprised to see early signs of cataracts or glaucoma

That’s why having an ophthalmologist near you or on your side is so important. Because we can look straight through your pupil to see what’s really happening. Before things get out of control.

Reason #2- Have A New Family Friend Who Watches Over Your Eyes

mothe and daughter sitting on a bench wearing eye glasses

Most people go to regular dental checkups. (At least I hope!) Yet- many women see their eye doctor less than once every two years.

That’s a mistake. Why? Because your eyes are the window into your entire life! They create everything you see, experience, and remember. So it only makes sense to pay extra attention to your eyes right?

Correct. And here at Snead Eye Group- you’ll have a team of friendly specialists who watch over your eyes. They’ll watch over you for years and decades so you can feel comfortable knowing your eye health is taken care of.

Reason #3- Get The Latest In Eye Care Technology

    eye cataract technology

It’s no secret that technology is changing fast. There are crazy gadgets everywhere, computers on every street corner, and holograms of Michael Jackson performing at concerts…

And the same technology boom is happening with eye care technology. For example- new scanning technologies to help diagnose diabetes-related eye diseases. Or artificial intelligence solutions which help ophthalmologists diagnose complicated diseases in less time.

I’m telling you this because, when you have an eye-care doctor you can trust from the Snead Eye Group… they’ll keep you up to date with the latest technology to keep your eyes healthy for longer.

For you, and your whole family.

  • Why an Online Eye Test Can Never Replace Your Eye Doctor

Why an Online Eye Test Can Never Replace Your Eye Doctor

    [et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ admin_label=”section” _builder_version=”3.22″ global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_row admin_label=”row” _builder_version=”3.25″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”3.25″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” _builder_version=”4.13.1″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content” sticky_enabled=”0″]

Online vision tests don't replace an eye doctor! No doubt that the popularity of taking eye “exams” online has grown. The “one-stop shop” idea of taking your eye exam and ordering your glasses or contacts online sounds very appealing. After all, time is precious and we all need more time, right? Time savings aside, this is not the best decision for your overall eye health.

What You Need to Know About Online Eye “Exams” And Vision Tests

First, it’s important to understand that an online eye test – even if it’s called an “online eye exam” – does not evaluate the overall health of your eyes.

An online eye test allows you to check your vision between regular exams by your eye doctor. Usually, an online vision test only measures your visual acuity and refractive error. While seemingly helpful, these measurements tell little or nothing about the overall health of your eyes and whether you have conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma or macular degeneration. A comprehensive eye exam is the only way to insure your eyes are healthy and free from sight-threatening conditions!

Additionally, there is no trained eye care professional present online to carefully examine the health of your eyes. As previously mentioned, online eye exams cannot determine if you have cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, and other general eye health problems that your doctor can detect during a comprehensive eye exam. Early detection of these problems is critical in improving treatment outcomes, potentially preventing vision loss and legal blindness.

    Other Issues to Consider

Even if your eyes are perfectly healthy, there is a greater risk of getting an incorrect prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses with self-administered online vision tests. If you don’t take the online vision tests correctly, it’s possible you won’t be seeing as clearly as you should for driving, or you may experience problems such as headaches and eyestrain with your new glasses or contacts.

And what do you do if you think your prescription might be incorrect? Do you have to retake the online vision test again? Do you have to pay for the second test, with no guarantee the new results will be any better? It’s a risk not worth taking.

Online Eye Exam Cost: Not Necessarily a Money-Saver

You might think an online eye test will save you time and money compared with the cost of a comprehensive eye exam performed by an optometrist or ophthalmologist.

But remember, you are only receiving a small part of the services provided by your eye doctor during a complete exam.

Also, the cost of online vision tests typically is not covered by health insurance or vision insurance. Therefore, if you have a vision benefits plan, your co-pay cost for a comprehensive eye exam might be less than the cost of an online eye test.

    The Bottom Line

It is essential for you to have a live, face-to-face comprehensive eye exam with your eye doctor on a routine basis to safeguard the health of your eyes and enjoy a lifetime of good vision. Online eye exams can never take the place of an eye care professional, nor will it detect serious eye conditions – no matter what age you are!

Would you like to know what is covered during a comprehensive eye exam? Call Snead Eye Group today at 239.936.8686 to make an appointment with one of our eye care professionals at one of our three locations in Fort Myers and Naples.

See the difference. Your eyes will thank you!

Dr. Brad Snead is one of the first to implant the iStent Inject in Fort Myers

FORT MYERS, FL. (September 13, 2018) –Snead Eye Group Medical Director, Dr. Brad A. Snead , M.D., F.A.C.S., is one of the first physicians in Southwest Florida to perform the iStent inject® procedure which took place at the Fort Myers Eye Surgery Center.

The iStent inject® Trabecular Micro-Bypass System (simply known as the iStent inject®) is for patients with mild to moderate, primary open-angle glaucoma. Glaucoma is a group of vision-threatening eye diseases that can cause damage to the optic nerve, which connects to the brain at the back of the eye. The damage caused by glaucoma is irreversible and unfortunately, is one of the leading causes of vision loss. Glaucoma is a disease without noticeable symptoms until the patient begins to lose their peripheral vision.

To help mitigate the effects of glaucoma, the iStent inject® is implanted into the drainage channel of the inside of the eye to enhance better drainage of fluid from inside the eye.

“The iStent inject® during cataract surgery is actually two tiny implants, which make up the world’s smallest medical device implanted in the human body,” explained Dr. Brad A. Snead. “The iStent inject® can make a huge impact for patients who receive it. Once implanted, the device can help restore normal pressure in the eye.”

Founder Dr. John W. Snead added, “The iStent inject®restores your eye’s natural ability to drain the fluid that causes the increased pressure inside your eye and keeps eye pressure at a normal level. These benefits may reduce or eliminate your need for glaucoma medication”

Snead Eye Group is one of largest ophthalmology practices in Southwest Florida with more than 30 experienced staff members, four ophthalmologists and one optometrist. Snead Eye Group provides eye care services for a lifetime, from fitting children with their first pair of glasses to curing cataracts. The latest technology and treatment options are available from Snead Eye Group with locations in Fort Myers and Naples.

    September is Healthy Aging Month

    Reinvent Yourself Now!

September Snead Eye Group blog post imagePositive thinking is the cornerstone of positive outcomes! Imagine yourself at age 30, 40 or 50 – what were the best attributes of those years? Now pretend you’re that age and live it! In celebration of Healthy Aging month, here are some great tips to reinvent yourself no matter what your current age is!

    1. Be positive in your conversations and your actions every day. When you catch yourself complaining, check yourself right there and change the conversation to something positive.
    2. Get rid of people in your life that are always negative! Surround yourself with energetic, happy, positive people of all ages and you will be happier too.
    3. Walk like a vibrant, healthy person even if you have mobility challenges. Stand (or sit for those who are wheelchair-bound) up as straight as you can! You will look great and feel better.
    4. How’s your smile? Research shows people who smile more often are happier. Don’t like your teeth? Ask your dentist about whitening or other procedures that will help your smile!
    5. Feeling a little lonely? Right this minute, pick up the phone and make a call to do one or more of the following: volunteer your time, take a class, invite someone to meet for lunch, brunch, dinner, or coffee.
    6. Start walking not only for your health, but to meet your neighbors. Have a dog? You’ll be amazed at how a dog can be a conversation starter! If you don’t have time for a dog, go to your local animal shelter and volunteer. You will be thrilled by the puppy love!
    7. Make this month, Healthy Aging Month, the time to set up your annual physical examination, eye health and other health screenings.

August is Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month! Here are 8 natural ways to improve your child’s eyesight.

    1. Leafy Veggies
Green leafy vegetables are rich in Vitamin A and promote healthy eyesight in children. They also contain carotenoids, which help maintain a healthy retina, and are also rich in antioxidants, which protect your child’s eyes from the harmful rays of the sun.
    2. Fruits
Citrus fruits, like oranges and lemons, are rich in Vitamin C, which fortifies eye health. Regular consumption of these fruits reduces the risk of cataracts as well. It is also important to eat organic fruits and vegetables whenever possible to avoid any toxicity that can affect eye sight.
    3. Fish Oil
Fish oil is rich in DHA, which is a fatty acid that is also found in our eye retina. Low levels of DHA can cause dry eye symptoms, which can disturb your child’s eyesight. Add a slice of salmon, tuna or mackerel to your child’s lunch bowl to strengthen eyesight.
    4. Vitamin Supplements
Poor nutrition due to poor eating habits can lead to poor eyesight in your child. If your child refuses to eat vegetables (like many do!) and fruits, power up his/her meals with vitamin supplements. Delicious food supplements specifically for children are also available.
    5. Nuts and Seeds
Nuts and seeds are tasty snacks and they are rich in Vitamin A and zinc that protect your child’s eyes. Flax seeds, almonds, chia seeds, and cashews can do wonders for your child’s eyesight. Pack them in your child’s snack box or blend them into a smoothie!
    6. Resting
Well-rested eyes are always the healthiest! If your child loves reading or watching television, make sure he/she is also getting ample rest. If the eyes are put to work for a long time, they get stressed and strained. Remind your child to rest every ten minutes of continuous reading, watching TV or using the computer.
    7. Eggs
Eggs are not only rich in vitamins and proteins but also in a special carotenoid called lutein. Lutein prevents macular degeneration and blindness. Getting lutein into your child’s diet is a great way to promote eye health!
    8. Legumes
Legumes are a rich source of zinc and bioflavonoids, which promote healthy eyesight and protect the retina from damage in children. Kidney beans, black-eyed peas, and lentils are great examples of legumes that you can include in your child’s diet.

While a good diet can help maintain healthy eyes, nothing can take the place of regular eye health check-ups for your child. Call Snead Eye Group today to make an appointment for your child at one of our convenient locations in Fort Myers and Naples.
