    Lighthouse of SWFL

Lighthouse of swflIn the words of Helen Keller, “The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision.” Thankfully, the leadership team of The Lighthouse of SWFL has the vision required to understand and meet the many needs of southwest Florida’s blind and sight-impaired residents; Snead Eye Group shares and actively supports that vision as well.

Lighthouse of SWFL is a United Way Partner agency with a mission to enable people of all ages living with a visual impairment or blindness to remain independent, active and productive in society.  Snead Eye Group’s Dr. Jay S. Rosen, OD, FAAO, demonstrates his commitment to that mission by serving on the Board of Directors of The Lighthouse of SWFL in the capacity of Director.

Dr. Rosen has been an active member and integral part of Lighthouse’s Board of Directors since September, 2011; he was enthusiastically recommended by Dr. Angela Kaplan, a Board Member at that time. Within those years of service, he has made many valuable leadership contributions as a board member, including the strengthening of Lighthouse’s relationship with the Southwest Florida Optometric Association.

With his expertise as an eye specialist, Dr. Rosen brings a much-appreciated perspective to Lighthouse of SWFL in every aspect of his involvement with the organization from attending monthly board meetings, fundraiser events, and other Lighthouse functions.

“Dr. Rosen is always a positive, committed supporter of the Lighthouse of SWFL,” says Linn Higgins, Executive Assistant/Human Resources Coordinator of Lighthouse. “He truly cares about people experiencing vision loss.”

Snead Insights – Annual Eye Exams Can Be Lifesavers!

It’s important not to wait until you notice a change in your vision before scheduling your annual eye exam because eye problems are many times silent and present no symptoms. A recent study found that one in four adults were unaware that an eye exam could prevent them from losing their eye sight. Even if you’ve had laser vision surgery or have naturally good vision, it’s important to see your eye care professional annually. During your exam, a SNEAD EYE GROUP physician will look for eye muscle imbalance, vision disorders, and eye disease that could potentially cause future problems.

So don’t wait until a street sign looks blurry, or you have trouble seeing objects close up. In addition to detecting vision changes, regular eye exams can also detect life-threatening conditions such as high cholesterol and even brain tumors. The slower months in Southwest Florida are a good time to visit SNEAD EYE GROUP.

During the month of August, SNEAD EYE GROUP is offering 30% off eyeglass frames in our optical department.

Don’t Let Poor Vision Affect Your Balance

Did you know poor vision can affect your balance?

Poor or blurred vision, flashes of light or black spots can occur over time as we age. Your eyes can also take longer to adjust to changes in light and the ability to judge the steepness of stairs and curbs can also be a challenge.

Your vision not only helps you avoid obstacles, but it also helps you maintain balance. Your eyes work like a level, which is a tool that tells you if a surface is flat and even. Everyday, without realizing it, you see vertical and horizontal objects like buildings and your eyes use this information to help you stand and stay upright.

Poor balance therefore can be a result of poor vision. SNEAD EYE GROUP is dedicated to your good eye health. If it has been awhile since you had an eye exam, particularly if you have experienced any signs of dizziness or unbalance, we encourage you to see one of our physicians for a thorough eye exam, which can also detect other health issues you may not even be aware of!

Call Snead Eye Group to schedule your eye exam for optimal overall health.

Many times patients are confused about the difference between which insurance plan covers what. The physicians at Snead Eye Group provide comprehensive medical eye exams for those with eye disorders, as well as routine vision exams.

If you have both vision and medical insurance it is helpful to know that the purpose of your vision insurance is to provide a routine eye exam to check the overall health of your eye. This is similar to a preventative visit to your Primary Care Physician. In addition, your vision insurance may have an allowance for glasses or contacts if needed. If you are being evaluated for any medical conditions, such as cataracts, glaucoma or diabetes, you are being provided with medical care and as such, your visit will be filed with your medical insurance.

If you have vision insurance and Snead Eye Group is participating in your vision plan, a vision exam will be filed as a secondary claim after your medical plan completes the claim for any medical services. If you are being seen for a routine eye exam and do not have vision coverage, your medical insurance will not pay for the exam.

When you visit Snead Eye Group for a routine eye evaluation, we collect the fee at the time of service unless we participate with your vision plan. If we are participating, we will follow your plan’s guidelines and collect applicable copay and/or co-insurance at the time of service.

Rest assured, our knowledgable staff will determine the appropriate plan (medical or vision) to file your claim with, based on the results of your exam. We look forward to being your eye doctor of choice!

Just as it is important to visit your medical doctor for a yearly check-up it is equally important to have routine eye examinations with your eye care specialist on a regular basis.

Older drivers with cataracts, even only in one eye, have a greatly increased risk of car crashes according to a study published in the national journal Archives of Opthalmology.

Dr. Cynthia Owsley, and other researchers at the University of Alabama, studied 274 older drivers.

Even though most of these older drivers with cataracts thought that they saw perfectly, they were six times more likely to have automobile accidents.

Their vision, as measured by vision charts, did not predict which older drivers were likely to be involved in accidents.

Many older drivers are driving with impaired vision and don’t even know it, and by age 75, cataracts will affect a majority of all people.

Snead Eye Group offers the latest methods in cataract detection and treatment with state-of-the-art technology and a professional, caring staff who understands the needs and concerns of our patients. A diagnosis of cataracts does not have to interfere with the quality of life you deserve, including your ability to drive at night! Our surgeons perform thousands of cataract removal procedures a year. Our practice is know throughout Southwest Florida as “one of the best” in the field of opthalmology as evidenced by the number of patients referred everyday by their friends, family and other doctors in the community.

If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with cataracts, call our office today for a cataract evaluation. Our goal is to provide as much information as possible to assist in your decision making process.
