tecnis eyes“I can see clearly now the rain is gone, I can see all obstacles in my way.” Metaphorically speaking, most of us understand these iconic lyrics from the popular song released in 1972 by Johnny Nash. But from a literal standpoint, in the United States alone, there are 11 million people and growing who cannot see clearly due to a common vision disorder known as presbyopia .

Often referred to as “the aging eye condition,” presbyopia refers to the decreased ability, over time, to change between focusing on close and far objects. Do you remember the day you had to hold the ingredient label at arm’s length in order to read it? You are far from alone. Worldwide, nearly 1.7 billion people have presbyopia and that number is expected to soar to 2.1 billion by 2020. (1)

In a healthy eye, the natural lens is a transparent structure that, along with the cornea, helps to refract light to be focused on the retina. The lens, by changing shape, functions to change the focal distance of the eye so that it can focus on objects at various distances. Read more

glaucoma January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month, an important time to spread the word about this sight-stealing disease.

Glaucoma is called “the sneak thief of sight” since there are no symptoms and once vision is lost, it’s permanent. As much as 40% of vision can be lost without a person noticing. Read more from glaucoma research foundation here.

New technology available for hard to fit contact lens patients

Successful management of contact lenses can be a frustrating process for patients with irregular corneas. The fitting and evaluation process may involve multiple visits and increased costs.  Fortunately the contact lens industry has responded to the need for better contact lens materials and technologies to assist hard to fit patients.  New vault mapping software available at SNEAD EYE GROUP is used for more precise visualization and mapping of the central corneal clearance (CCC), a key measurement related to how well a lens rests on the eye. Sunglasses may make us look cool, but more importantly is their ability to protect our eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays.  The necessity for wearing sunglasses year round, especially in Southwest Florida where we spend so much time on the beach and waterways, can’t be overstated. And, because the cumulative effects are dangerous to our eye health, it’s never too early to start wearing sunglasses either. Children should be encouraged to wear sunglasses as early as possible.

Here are just a few of the serious risks to our eye associated with UV damage:

    • Cataracts – a clouding of the eye’s lens that can blur vision. An estimated 20% of cases are caused by extended UV exposure.
    • Macular degeneration – Results from damage to the retina and can destroy central vision. Macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in the United States.

    • Pterygium – a tissue growth over the white part of the surface of the eye that can alter the curve of the eyeball. This causes astigmatism.

Not all sunglasses are created equal and it pays to purchase well. Look for glasses that block out 99 to 100% of both UVA and UVB radiation.

SNEAD EYE GROUP has a large selection of quality sunglasses.  Better yet, use this coupon for 20% OFF sunglasses in our optical department!  Just show this email to a SNEAD optician or CLICK HERE to download a printable version.

Caring for themselves is one of the most important – and most often forgotten – things caregivers must do for themselves.

The stress and physical demands of caregiving place older caregivers at risk for health problems of their own. Even adult children who have assumed a caregiver role for their parents while juggling work and raising children face an increased risk for depression, chronic illness and a decline in quality of life.

Research has shown that despite these risks, caregivers of any age are less likely than non-caregivers to practice preventive healthcare and will postpone or fail to make medical appointments for themselves. That’s why SNEAD EYE GROUP strongly encourages caregivers to schedule an annual eye exam.  This one simple appointment can address visual loss issues which may affect the ability to care for another person, as well as detect other health concerns you yourself may not be aware of.

Remember, it is not selfish to focus on your own needs and desires when you are a caregiver-it’s an important part of the job.

If you’re a caregiver, remember to take care of yourself and call our office today to schedule your annual eye exam – or encourage a caregiver you know to do so. With two convenient locations in Naples and Fort Myers, there’s no reason to put it off any longer.

Snead Eye GroupKeratoconus is an eye disorder in which the cornea becomes misshapen and can lead to double vision, distorted vision, blurred or streaked vision and sensitivity to light. In the early stages symptoms might be similar to those of any other refractive defect. With the progression of the disease however, eyesight deteriorates, sometimes quickly. Visual sharpness becomes impaired both near and far, and night vision is typically bad.

Dr. Jay S. Rosen, board certified optometric physician with SNEAD EYE GROUP, is trained in hard to fit corrective lenses which allow patients suffering from Keratoconus to drive legally and function in daily life. Whenever you notice a change in vision, you should consult with an eye care physician as quickly as possible. SNEAD EYE GROUP physicians are highly trained and experienced in diagnosing and treating issues such as keratoconus which could lead to further deterioration if left unattended.

Vision Insurance. Do I need it?
If you’re confused about the difference between vision and medical insurance, you’re not alone. Because vision insurance is supplemental to regular health insurance, it can be difficult to understand which benefits are included and which ones must be purchased.

Insurance companies sometimes handle routine eye exams differently than medical eye exams. Your medical insurance may cover a medical eye problem, but not pay for the exam if it is a “routine” eye exam for near sightedness for example. Many vision plans also provide coverage for glasses and contact lenses.

In addition, some medical insurance will cover one routine eye exam every two years in addition to covering an eye exam that is for a medical eye problem. Study your policy as plan coverage varies.

If you have concerns about your eye health, but you also need new glasses, your eye doctor may charge you a refraction fee. Insurance companies usually separate the components of an eye exam, one being the comprehensive exam and the other being the refraction. Typically, vision insurance policies usually cover both the eye exam and the refraction, while medical policies cover the exam only.

If you have questions about your vision insurance or your need for it, feel free to consult with a SNEAD EYE GROUP representative who can assist you. Life is busy enough. Worrying about your vision insurance shouldn’t complicate matters!

Alternative glaucoma treatments can reduce or eliminate the need for eye drops, helping reduce the possibility of infection!

    October is Infection Prevention Month.

Traditional prescription eye drops are not for everyone. Besides the need to use them daily for glaucoma treatment, eye drops carry a risk of infection. The professionals at SNEAD EYE GROUP can treat glaucoma with two innovative, alternative methods, both conveniently preformed at our Fort Myers and Naples surgery centers.

Dr. John Snead and Dr. Brad Snead are certified to perform iStent Trabecular Micro-Bypass. Approved by the FDA, the iStent is the world’s smallest medical device, providing long-term, non-medicinal treatment for patients suffering from Open-Angle Glaucoma. This tiny titanium stent is inserted into the eye to help aide in the natural draining of intraocular fluid into the blood stream, reducing pressure build up within the eye. A large percentage of patients who receive the iStent report a reduction in the number of medications needed.

Another option is Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty, also referred to as SLT, whereby laser energy is applied to the drainage tissue in the eye. This starts a chemical and biological change in the tissue that results in better drainage of fluid through the drain and out of the eye. Some people may no longer need drops – others may have to use one less drop.

Since both procedures are accepted glaucoma treatments, and FDA approved, they are covered by Medicare and most medical insurances. Consult with a SNEAD EYE GROUP professional today to learn if you’re a candidate for either of these innovative treatment options!

Did you know that good health and nutrition play critical roles for maintaining a set of healthy eyes? Studies show that protecting your eyes starts with the food on your plate. Foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc, and vitamins C and E can help ward off age-related vision problems such as macular degeneration and cataracts, In fact, a study published in the Archives of Ophthalmology found a high intake of foods such as spinach, kale, turnip greens, collards, broccoli, pumpkin, and corn can reduce the risk of cataracts by 18%!  “Eating leafy green vegetables is not only good for your health, it’s good for your vision. The old saying an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, is very true when it comes to healthy eyes,” says Dr. Brad Snead with SNEAD EYE GROUP.

Green leafy vegetables not your thing? Have you tried kale chips?! They are super tasty, easy to make and will treat your eyes to loads of good nutrients! Here’s a link to a recipe so you can try them at home – Click here
Regularly eating these foods below can help lead to good eye health:

    * Green, leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale,
    and collards
    * Salmon, tuna, and other oily fish
    * Eggs, nuts, beans, and other non-meat protein sources * Oranges and other citrus fruits or juices
