Ultraviolet (UV) light is an invisible, electromagnetic radiation. Your exposure to UV rays comes primarily from the sun, even on a cloudy day. The sun emits UV rays, and unprotected, prolonged exposure can cause serious vision problems. Many Americans do not understand the dangers of UV exposure and take needless risks with their eyesight. The Vision Council’s VisionWatch survey of more than 10,000 adults shows Americans are concerned about potential eye problems from the sun’s UV rays, yet they have a passive relationship with UV-protective sunglasses.

The stress and physical demands of caregiving place older caregivers at risk for health problems of their own. Even adult children who have assumed a caregiver role for their parents while juggling work and raising children face an increased risk for depression, chronic illness and a decline in quality of life.
Research has shown that despite these risks, caregivers of any age are less likely than non-caregivers to practice preventive healthcare and will postpone or fail to make medical appointments for themselves. That’s why SNEAD EYE GROUP strongly encourages caregivers to schedule an annual eye exam. This one simple appointment can address visual loss issues which may affect the ability to care for another person, as well as detect other health concerns you yourself may not be aware of.
Remember, it is not selfish to focus on your own needs and desires when you are a caregiver-it’s an important part of the job.
If you’re a caregiver, remember to take care of yourself and call our office today to schedule your annual eye exam – or encourage a caregiver you know to do so. With two convenient locations in Naples and Fort Myers, there’s no reason to put it off any longer.

Has your night vision ever seemed worse after a trip to the beach? Bright sunlight for an extended period can impair night vision for up to two days. If you’re experiencing issues with nighttime vision, it’s time for a visit to an eye doctor. The professionals at SNEAD EYE GROUP are specially trained to diagnose and treat this and many more conditions.
SEASONAL RESIDENTS BE PREPARED! Glasses can get lost or broken. Contacts can cause eye irritation. Lots of people would love to reduce or eliminate their dependency on both. That’s where LASIK can help. LASIK is a form of laser vision correction whereby an eye surgeon uses a laser beam to reshape the cornea of your eye to make it more ideal for focusing light, thus improving your vision. At SNEAD EYE GROUP this is one of our most popular elective surgeries!Laser vision correction can give patients with common vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism, better vision. This can help to reduce dependency on glasses or contact lenses, and in some cases eliminate dependency entirely!
In one survey, 87 percent of LASIK patients said they would recommend it to their friends. There is no minimum amount of correction required, and speaking to a SNEAD eye care professional about it can be the first step to changing how you see the world forever. This new year, give yourself the gift of better vision with LASIK. Call today to schedule your consultation.

The sunny skies of Florida are a big reason why so many of us enjoy living in and visiting the area. However, our sunny climate also has its risks when it comes to our eye health. May is Ultraviolet Awareness Month and SNEAD Eye Group wants to make sure you are protected from the risks of over exposure to the sun’s harmful UV radiation.
Most of us are familiar with the risks from sunburn and skin cancer, however, our eyes are also susceptible to UV radiation with an increase in the chance of developing cataracts, macular degeneration, and even damage to the retina.
Pingueculae and pterygia, growths on the eye’s surface which can become unsightly and cause corneal problems and distorted vision, can be caused by over exposure. Certain drugs can also increase your sensitivity to UV radiation.The American Ophthalmology Association recommends wearing quality sunglasses that offer UV protection. To provide adequate protection, sunglasses should:
• Block out 99 to 100 percent of both UV-A and UV-B radiation.
• Screen out 75 to 90 percent of visible light.
• Be perfectly matched in color and free of distortion and imperfection.
• Have lenses that are gray for proper color recognition.SNEAD Eye Group recommends seeing your eye doctor for an annual comprehensive eye examination as a good way to monitor your eye health, maintain good vision and keep track of your solar radiation protection needs, as well as new advances in eye protection. Call us today and protect your eyes for tomorrow.

Don’t Let Poor Vision Affect Your Balance
[et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ admin_label=”section” _builder_version=”3.22″ global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_row admin_label=”row” _builder_version=”3.25″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”3.25″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” _builder_version=”4.14.6″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content” sticky_enabled=”0″]
Did you know poor vision can affect your balance?
Poor or blurred vision, flashes of light or black spots can occur over time as we age. Your eyes can also take longer to adjust to changes in light and the ability to judge the steepness of stairs and curbs can also be a challenge.
Your vision not only helps you avoid obstacles, but it also helps you maintain balance. Your eyes work like a level, which is a tool that tells you if a surface is flat and even. Everyday, without realizing it, you see vertical and horizontal objects like buildings and your eyes use this information to help you stand and stay upright.
Poor balance therefore can be a result of poor vision. SNEAD EYE GROUP is dedicated to your good eye health. If it has been awhile since you had an eye exam, particularly if you have experienced any signs of dizziness or unbalance, we encourage you to see one of our physicians for a thorough eye exam, which can also detect other health issues you may not even be aware of!
Call Snead Eye Group to schedule your eye exam for optimal overall health.

Tips for Avoiding Computer Eye Strain
[et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ admin_label=”section” _builder_version=”3.22″ global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_row admin_label=”row” _builder_version=”3.25″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”3.25″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” _builder_version=”4.14.6″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content” sticky_enabled=”0″]
Use proper lighting. Decrease sunlight with window coverings and avoid overhead fluorescent lights. Floor lights that provide indirect lighting are a better alternative. Switching to full spectrum fluorescent lights can be more comfortable as well.
Minimize glare. Consider installing an anti-glare screen on your monitor. Darker walls with a matte finish are also better than bright white walls. Upgrade your monitor. Select a screen with the highest resolution possible. 19″ in diameter or larger with a dot pitch of .28 mm or smaller is recommended for desktop computers.
Take breaks. Take a minimum of two 15 minute breaks and 4 two-minute breaks in an 8 hour period. Stand up, move around and stretch your arms, legs, back, neck and shoulders to reduce tension and muscle fatigue.
Adjust your work area. Sit 20-40 inches from your monitor. If you look between paper and your computer throughout the day, place written pages on a document holder adjacent to your monitor. Light the copy stand, but do not have the light shine in your eyes or on the monitor.
Consider computer eyewear. You may benefit from having your eye care professional modify your eyeglasses prescription to create customized computer glasses. Computer glasses are a good choice if you wear bifocals or progressive lenses, because these lenses generally are not optimal for the distance to your computer screen.
Get a comprehensive eye exam. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health recommends computer users have a yearly eye exam. Consult with your doctor about additional factors that may impact your eye comfort. Let your doctor know how often you use a computer, measure how far your eyes are from the screen and tell your doctor so he can test your vision at that distance.
