TRAINING: Dr. Robin did his undergraduate training at Pennsylvania State University where he graduated Summa Cum Laude. He received his Medical Degree from Jefferson Medical College [now Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University] (Philadelphia) in 1978 where he was awarded membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Dr. Robin’s education was part of a combined 5-Year B.S./M.D. program with Pennsylvania State University and Jefferson Medical College; he graduated medical school at the age of 22. Dr. Robin completed an Ophthalmology residency at Georgetown University School of Medicine (Washington DC) in 1982 where he served as Chief Resident. He completed a Cornea and Refractive Surgery fellowship at the University of Southern California School of Medicine [now the Keck School of Medicine at USC] (Los Angeles) and a National Eye Institute-sponsored Corneal Virology and Immunology research fellowship at the Louisiana State University Eye Center (New Orleans).
CAREER: Dr. Robin has held full-time academic positions in the Departments of Ophthalmology at the University of Southern California, University of Illinois at Chicago, Westside VA Medical Center (Chicago), and Cleveland Clinic (Cleveland). He also established Cornea and Refractive Surgery practices in suburban Chicago, Cleveland and Orlando. He has served as Medical Director and Chief Surgeon at TLC Laser Eye Centers (Tampa, Boca Raton) and LASIK Plus Vision Centers (Orlando, Jacksonville). Most recently, he developed LASIK and Refractive Surgery services in Ft. Myers and Broward County FL; in both settings he also initiated successful Dry Eye Centers of Excellence. For more than a decade, Dr. Robin held the position of Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at UCF College of Medicine (Orlando).
EXPERIENCE: Dr. Robin is a board-certified ophthalmologist and has been in practice since 1985. In the early stages of his career, Dr. Robin’s practice focus was primarily
diseases and surgery of the cornea. For most of the last 25 years, Dr. Robin’s professional focus has expanded to include LASIK and other forms of vision correction (refractive) surgery. He was involved in some of the early FDA clinical trials for laser vision correction surgery (both PRK and LASIK), as well as several industry-sponsored refractive surgery clinical studies. Dr. Robin has been certified on nearly every available refractive surgery laser in the USA. He has also been involved in other refractive surgical techniques, including SMILE, Intacs, and corneal inlays. Because of his long dedication to elective vision correction surgery, Dr. Robin is considered to be one of the most experienced refractive surgeons in the country. And, it is believed that Dr. Robin was one of the earliest eye doctors in the world to have had laser vision correction on his own eyes (1992)! Additionally, he has performed refractive surgery on many of his family members (including his wife and two of his children), friends and hundreds of physicians (including other ophthalmologists!). In addition to cornea and refractive surgery, Dr. Robin’s has also been involved in the diagnosis and management of dry eye as well as diagnosis and management of keratoconus. Furthermore, Dr. Robin has been involved in general ophthalmology at various points in his career.
MEMBERSHIPS: Dr. Robin has been a member of numerous medical and ophthalmic professional organizations and has served on several professional editorial and advisory boards. Also, he has held several leadership positions, including President, in the International Society of Refractive Surgery (ISRS), the largest professional organization devoted to this field. Dr. Robin has also served on the Executive Committee of the Refractive Surgery Alliance, the top new international professional organization dedicated to the advancement of refractive surgery, and he is a Fellow of the World College of Refractive Surgery and Visual Sciences.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Dr. Robin has a significant record of teaching, research and clinical achievement. He has published nearly 200 scientific papers, abstracts and book chapters, most involving LASIK, other forms of refractive surgery, and corneal and external diseases. Dr. Robin has also given hundreds of lectures to eye doctors both in the USA and around the world. He has received several prestigious professional awards, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Honor Award, the ISRS’s Lans Honorary Lectureship and the ISRS Founders’ Award, as well as many visiting professorships and honorary lectureships in leading ophthalmology institutions and organizations around the world. Dr. Robin has held several academic ophthalmology positions at some of the country’s most prestigious institutions. Additionally, he has been involved as an investigator in scores of refractive surgery clinical studies, including several FDA-sponsored and industry-sponsored trials involving PRK and LASIK. His extensive experience and accomplishments have enabled him to be recognized as an authority in the field of refractive surgery. During his career, Dr. Robin has been voted by his peers into several regional and national “Best Doctors” awards.
PERSONAL: Dr. Robin and his wife have three grown children, two sons and one daughter. One son is a professional rock/metal guitarist who also has a recording arts degree as well as a Masters in Business Entertainment. The other son is a practicing Dentist in Orlando and has a Masters in Business Administration degree. His daughter is a musical theatre performer in New York. Dr. Robin has strong interests outside of ophthalmology. He is an avid accomplished wildlife photographer (specializing in bird photography) and has continued his life-long love of traveling.
